Trump’s Contentious Gaza Vision: Displacement, US Control Discussed with Netanyahu

Former President Donald Trump recently put forward a highly controversial proposal regarding the future of the Gaza Strip, including calls for the permanent displacement of its Palestinian population and suggestions for potential United States control over the territory.

The remarks were reportedly made during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. The discussion centered on formulating plans for Gaza following the intense conflict that has lasted for 15 months in the territory.

Proposal Details Emerge

Sources summarizing the meeting indicated that former President Trump called for measures amounting to the ethnic cleansing of the entire Gaza Strip. This proposal envisioned the permanent displacement of the more than 2 million Palestinians residing in the territory.

The destinations suggested for this mass relocation included neighboring countries such as Jordan and Egypt, as well as references to “other countries.” In addition to advocating for this widespread displacement, Trump also reportedly suggested that the United States should potentially take ownership of Gaza.

Proposed US Responsibilities

Under the proposed scenario where the United States assumes a role in Gaza, Trump outlined several significant responsibilities for Washington. These included the critical and dangerous task of dismantling unexploded bombs and other weapons scattered throughout the territory after the protracted conflict.

Furthermore, the proposal involved leveling the site, suggesting significant reconstruction or reshaping of the landscape. A major component of the suggested U.S. involvement was the creation of economic development initiatives, specifically aimed at providing jobs and housing for the population in the area.

Military and Security Aspects

The former President also reportedly addressed military support for Israel during the discussion. He indicated that he had lifted a pause on the supply of U.S.-made 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, a significant type of ordnance used in the conflict.

Adding another layer to the potential U.S. involvement, Trump did not rule out the possibility of sending U.S. troops to Gaza, suggesting a potential direct military presence in the territory as part of the post-conflict arrangements or implementation of his plan.

Widespread Rejection and Condemnation

The controversial nature of Trump’s proposal drew swift and strong condemnation from various regional and international actors.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas vehemently rejected the proposal. He characterized Trump’s ideas as a “serious violation of international law, and peace and stability in the region,” highlighting concerns about legality and the potential for further destabilization.

The Palestinian militant group Hamas also condemned the proposed ideas.

Additionally, leaders from key regional states reportedly voiced their opposition. The leaders of Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia were reported to have rejected the plan, underscoring the lack of regional support for such a significant and disruptive population transfer and change in territorial control.
