LONDON, UK – Post-punk trailblazer and co-founder of the seminal band The Raincoats, Gina Birch, has announced her highly anticipated second solo album, titled “Trouble.”
The new record is set for release on July 11, 2025, via the independent label Third Man Records.
Accompanying the album announcement is the debut of its potent lead single, “Causing Trouble Again.” A music video featuring a diverse collective of female artists has also been released to coincide with the single’s arrival.
A Follow-Up to Acclaimed Debut
“Trouble” follows Birch’s critically praised 2023 debut solo album, “I Play My Bass Loud.” This forthcoming release comprises 11 new songs that are described as a compelling fusion of post-punk textures, dub rhythms, and experimental rock soundscapes.
The album sees Birch reuniting with the production team behind her previous solo effort. “Trouble” was produced by Youth of Killing Joke, a respected figure known for his influential work across various genres. Engineering and mixing duties were handled by Michael Rendall, ensuring continuity in the sonic vision established on “I Play My Bass Loud.”
Exploring Themes of Resistance and Identity
In commenting on the album’s title, Birch stated that “Trouble” reflects the “mini revolutions” that have punctuated her life, as well as navigating the enduring “trouble of being a young woman.” This thematic core underscores the deeply personal and often politically charged nature of her work, continuing the legacy of The Raincoats’ commitment to challenging norms.
The Lead Single: “Causing Trouble Again”
The album’s lead single, “Causing Trouble Again,” clocks in at a substantial six minutes and draws direct inspiration from the significant “Women in Revolt!” feminist art exhibition held at Tate Britain. This inspiration highlights Birch’s continued engagement with feminist themes and artistic dialogue.
The track features contributions from prominent figures in art and music, including the pioneering industrial musician Cosey Fanni Tutti and the acclaimed writer and painter Caroline Coon. Their involvement underscores the single’s connection to a broader lineage of rebellious artistic expression and social commentary.
North American Tour Planned
To support the release of “Trouble,” Gina Birch is slated to embark on a North American tour in Fall 2025. She will join forces with the Miki Berenyi Trio, offering fans across the continent an opportunity to experience the new material live alongside repertoire from her extensive career.
Confirmed tour dates include a performance on October 10 in Washington, DC, followed by shows on October 11 in Brooklyn, NY, and October 12 in Cambridge, MA. The tour continues with Canadian dates on October 13 in Montreal, QC, and October 15 in Toronto, ON. The itinerary also features stops on October 16 in Ferndale, MI, October 17 in Chicago, IL, and concludes on October 18 in St. Paul, MN.
The announcement of “Trouble” signals the continued creative vitality of Gina Birch, promising another compelling chapter in her influential career.
