EU and Zuma Film Festival Launch 2025 Short Film Competition to Elevate Young Nigerian Filmmakers with Substantial Prizes

The European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, in partnership with the esteemed Zuma International Film Festival (ZIFF), has officially announced the launch of the 2025 edition of its Short Film Competition. This significant initiative is designed to discover, nurture, and celebrate emerging filmmaking talent across Nigeria, offering a substantial platform for creative expression and professional development.

Empowering the Next Generation of Storytellers

This new film competition aims to significantly enrich the understanding of modern filmography among young Nigerian filmmakers. It seeks to expose them to the latest industry trends and provide a vital stage for them to share compelling stories that resonate both locally and globally. The EU views film as a powerful instrument for driving social change and fostering rich cultural dialogue, aligning with its broader efforts to support Nigeria’s vibrant creative industries.

The competition is specifically targeting individuals aged 18 to 35 years old, encouraging a new wave of storytellers to explore their craft. Participants are tasked with creating a short film, with a maximum duration of three minutes, centered around the theme: “Being a Nigerian Youth” – Storytelling for Life and Creative Journeys of Nigerian Youth in today’s world. Entries submitted in languages other than English are welcomed, provided they are accompanied by English subtitles, ensuring wider accessibility.

Competition Mechanics and Lucrative Prizes

Entries will be rigorously judged based on a set of predetermined criteria, prioritizing thematic focus, the strength and clarity of the storyline and message, overall creativity, and technical quality in both picture and sound. This competition builds on the success of its previous editions, reflecting a growing commitment to investing in the future of Nigerian cinema.

The stakes are high for the participating filmmakers. The top ten entries selected will earn the prestigious opportunity to be screened at the Zuma International Film Festival. Beyond mere exhibition, these selected filmmakers will gain invaluable networking opportunities, access to mentorship from seasoned industry professionals, and receive constructive feedback crucial for their career progression. The top three winners will be awarded significant cash prizes: N1.5 million for the first-place winner, N750,000 for the second runner-up, and N500,000 for the third runner-up.

The Integral Impact Lab

Accompanying the competition is the crucial Impact Lab, an initiative that will host masterclasses led by internationally acclaimed filmmakers. These sessions are meticulously designed for emerging talents who are passionate about utilizing their creative skills to address pressing societal challenges. Topics covered will span essential areas such as impact storytelling, strategies for funding and distribution of impactful films, and insights into opportunities for short documentary grants. This component underscores the EU’s dedication to comprehensive filmmaker development, going beyond just competition prizes.

EU’s Broad Support for Nigeria’s Creative Sector

The EU’s engagement with Nigeria’s film industry extends beyond this specific competition. A broader €20 million initiative between Nigeria and the European Union is in place to strengthen partnerships within museums, support film festivals like ZIFF, and enhance the digital creative industries. This significant investment is aimed at harnessing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage to drive economic growth, create substantial job opportunities, and foster national unity. The EU recognizes the strategic role of cinema in soft power diplomacy, shaping perceptions, influencing global conversations, and fostering cross-cultural exchange, aligning with Nigeria’s ambition to achieve global recognition for its arts and culture.
